Mirror Lab: How Reflection and Refraction Work

M

Mirror Lab: How Reflection and Refraction Work

The first of the many labs conducted was on mirrors, which allowed me to work out the principles of reflection and refraction. The materials used were a plane, concave, and convex mirror. Noted was the behavior of light at the instance it hits these surfaces. One of the highlights was the construction of the ray diagrams in predicting the path light takes, and then verifying our predictions with actual setups. It was not the physics of mirrors that I had to learn but a way to develop my analytical skills by measuring the angles of incidence and reflection, calculating the focal points, and all that.

Magnetic Induction Lab: Unveiling Electromagnetism Power

Another unforgettable lab experience revolved around magnetic induction. What was exciting about this lab was the way it went straight to its application in the real world—for instance, how electricity is generated at power plants. We did a Faraday's Law of Induction lab, whereby we used coils and magnets to discover that changing magnetic fields could induce electric currents. I remember very well how exciting it was to see the galvanometer needle move at the presence of the induced current and further investigating the variables of this phenomenon, like number of turns of the coil or speed of change in the magnetic field. The hands-on experience really brought the concept of electromagnetic induction to life, far beyond what any textbook could do.
